This Sunday, one of my favorite discoveries of last Summer returns to Pittsburgh: Weather Permitting! “Weather Permitting” is a family-friendly, backyard BBQ-style concert series that was launched at the Shadyside Nursery on Sunday evenings by Pete Spynda, a local father and a well-known DJ/producer for Pandemic Pgh. I already wrote about “Weather Permitting” last year on my blog here; but, for the first time ever, I’m going to write about a topic AGAIN. Because it was THAT good!
A group of fun and friendly folk gather together on the grounds of the Shadyside Nursery on a beautiful summer evening. Old. Young. Single. Married. It doesn’t matter, because everybody is welcomed.
Throw in a pack of kids. Give them a sandbox, bubbles, hula hoops, watering cans, and lots of little friends. Take their shoes off.
Add in complimentary craft beer, tasty food trucks, and picnic blankets. Take YOUR shoes off.
Top it all off with talented musicians performing awesome live music on a brightly-colored funky stage.
THAT is “Weather Permitting!” And I’m so glad it’s back!
I recently had the chance to ask Pete about his inspiration for starting “Weather Permitting.” His response made a LOT of sense to me as a parent:
“I really liked the idea of introducing my friends (many of whom are parents) to some of my favorite bands. However, as a dad myself, I know that it can be difficult to find a babysitter for your kids if you want to go to a concert. A Sunday night family-friendly outdoor music series seemed like the perfect solution because a) it gives parents a chance to relax, listen to some great music, and NOT have to worry about cooking or cleaning up the dishes at the end of a hectic weekend and b) it gives kids a way to burn off their crazy evening energy in a contained environment without being out too late. Plus, they get to learn a little about local music, too! And this year we plan on making “Weather Permitting” even more family-friendly by potentially adding a giant jenga game, corn hole, and T-shirt printing with Commonwealth Press!”
“Weather Permitting” is held at the Shadyside Nursery (510 Maryland Avenue) from 5-9pm on Sunday evenings through the summer. It kicks off this week with performances by the Mon River Ramblers and Pennsylvania Hat Band. Rock Bottom Brewery will be providing beer and the Brassero Grill, Oh My Grill, and Leona’s Ice Cream trucks will be there. There will also be a Farmer’s Market on site. For a full lineup of their summer series, click here.
Tickets to “Weather Permitting” cost $10 for adults. Child admission is free. If you have photo identification, you will also receive a wrist band that lets you get complimentary beer (donations appreciated)!!
We invite you to join us at “Weather Permitting” this Summer! We hope to meet some new friends there, reconnect with old ones, discover new musicians, sample new food trucks, and genuinely enjoy our kids in a truly relaxed and beautiful setting!
