Wow! It’s been a long time since I’ve written on the blog. THANK YOU to everyone who has been patient with me. I’ve cherished every minute (almost) of this last summer with my kids before my daughter heads off to kindergarten next week. But it’s time to get back to the grind!

So, without further ado, here’s my weekly listing of family-friendly events for the weekend of August 28-30, 2015–the last weekend of summer for some folks, including us!

BikeFest 2015

It’s the last weekend of BikeFest 2015, and it’s jam-packed with cycling-themed events, including the Pedal Pittsburgh Family Ride on Sunday morning, culminating in the Finish Line Festival with live music, refreshments, etc. See this site for detailed information on all upcoming BikeFest events.


Friday Night, August 28

#wearePPS Back to School Event

Pittsburgh Public Schools is holding a district-wide back-to-school event at Pittsburgh King with light refreshments, a backpack and school supply giveaway, an informational fair for parents, haircuts and manicures for students, visits with Pittsburgh Steelers Terence Garvin and a variety of other free activities.

Times: 1-6pm

412Build Homewood Community Celebration

412Build is a summer program for youth ages 16 to 19 fostering entrepreneurship, makership, community development and play. This free event celebrates installations that 412Build students created this summer for Homewood’s Bible Center Church. Enjoy a free barbeque, music and lawn games. Please R.S.V.P. here.

WYEP Final Fridays at Schenley Plaza

WYEP hosts its Final Fridays outdoor concert at Schenley Plaza. This month’s musical guests are The Apache Relay (7pm) and Son Little (8pm).

South Park Summer Concert Series

The South Park Summer Concert Series presents the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, performing Eastern European music and dance.

Time: 7:30pm

Last Weekend of Cinema in the Park at Arsenal Park

Citiparks Cinema in the Park presents McFarland, USA (PG) at Arsenal Park.

Time: Sunset

Cost: Free

Saturday and Sunday, August 29-30

Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival

It’s Renaissance Festival time in Pittsburgh again, which means jousting knights, turkey legs, the royal court, live music, entertainment, games and much more. This weekend is themed “Celtic Fling.”

Times: 10:30-6:30pm

Cost: Adults: $18.95, Children Ages 5-12: $9.00, Children under 5: free with discounts available if you buy online.

Location: Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, 112 Renaissance Lane, West Newton, PA 15089


Indiana County Fair

Indiana County is hosting its annual fair. Couldn’t find much on their website, but heard through the grapevine that this is a nice county fair. See link above to browse the website for yourself.


Saturday, August 29

Free Science Day at the Carnegie Science Center

Admission is FREE to the Carnegie Science Center thanks to The Jack Buncher Foundation.

Times: 10-7pm

Cost: Free

Market House Centennial Celebration

Citiparks is hosting a centennial celebration for the historic South Side Market House with an indoor/outdoor block party with live bands, ethnic foods, health fair, kids corner and more.

Times: 10-4pm

Cost: Free

Location: South Side Market House, 12th and Bingham Streets, South Side


Out of the Darkness Pittsburgh Walk

Family members, friends and community members are invited to walk 3–5 miles to prevent suicide, raise awareness and end the stigma that surrounds depression and other mental disorders. Funds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Times: 10:30-12pm

Cost: Free, though donations are accepted

Location: Highmark Stadium


Larimer Festival

Celebrate the neighborhood of Larimer with musical performances, yoga, games, bouncy house, petting zoo, climbing wall and more.

Times: 12-10pm

Cost: Free

Location: Larimer Ave between East Liberty Blvd and Meadow St.


Roots: An Outdoor Roots Reggae Family Event

Bayardstown Social Club is hosting a public family-friendly reggae festival with live reggae, Caribbean-inspired face painting and lots of yummy Caribbean food.

Times: Noon (ish) to 6 (ish)

Cost: Adults $10, Kids under 12 Free

Location: Bayardstown Social Club, 3008 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh PA


Neu Kirche Contemporary Art Center Opening Celebration

Neu Kirche Contemporary Art Center (NK) in the Northside presents its public opening celebration with a range of activities taking place in local vacant lots and the Food City community garden. Activities for the day include a gallery exhibition, walking tour, artist performances and a selection of musical entertainment. Refreshments and food trucks will also be available to the public. This event is free and open to individuals of all ages.

South Oakland Community Day

South Oakland celebrates its annual Community Day with food, music, games and activities for all ages.

Times: 12-7pm

Location: Dan Marino Field/Frazier Fieldhouse at Frazier St and Dawson St.


Kids Comedy Cabaret

This weekend is the second annual Pittsburgh Comedy Festival and there’s a show just for kids! The Kids Comedy Cabaret begins with a chance for families to create costumes, craft props and dream up characters in “collaboration stations.” The actors will then perform an improv comedy and magic show, and the festivities will culminate with a dance party.

Waterfront Summer Block Party

The Waterfront celebrates the end of summer with a block party! There will be a Rock Bottom Biergarten, live music, free kids activities and special offers & giveaways from The Waterfront merchants.

Times: 5-8pm.

Cost: Free to attend, though select activities cost extra.

Squirrel Hill Night Market

Squirrel Hill debuts its monthly Night Market this weekend with the I Made It! Market, bands, DJs, food trucks, artists, a fire eater and contortionists.

Up at Deer Lakes Park Wagman Observatory

The Allegheny County Parks Department presents Up (PG) at the Deer Lakes Park Wagman Observatory.

Citiparks Cinema in the Parks presents Guardians of the Galaxy (PG-13) at Riverview Park.

Please note: The Pedal Pgh Family Ride (mentioned above) is this morning. Also, the Carnegie Science Center will open at 1pm and the National Aviary is closed all day.


sue’s run4kids

Support teenagers in the foster care system at sue’s run4kids, a family-friendly 4-mile race, 1-mile kids race and 1- and 2-mile fun runs and walks. There will be pre- and post-race parties at the Vietnam Veterans Pavilion with Magician AlMazing, face painting, Volunteer Princesses, music, food, family-friendly games and activities and a raffle. All proceeds support the Lipman Youth Fund at KidsVoice.

Times: 9-12pm

Cost: 4-mile race (all ages): $25, 1-mile kids race: $8, 1- and 2-mile fun runs and walks (ages 11+): $14, 1- and 2-mile fun runs and walks (ages 6-10): $8, Children 5 and under: FREE

Pittsburgh’s Hidden Treasures at Heinz History Center

Nearly 30 professional appraisers will help families learn about the historical significance and monetary value of their heirlooms at this event.

Times: 10-3pm

Cost: Free with admission

Location: Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman Street, Pittsburgh PA


Red, Ripe and Roasted Festival at Phipps

Celebrate two of my favorite things: tomatoes and garlic at Phipps with cooking demos, a tomato contest, kids’ activities and farmers offering locally grown produce — all to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Bring a bag of fresh produce to donate to the Food Bank and you get free admission to Phipps.

Times: 11-4pm

Cost: Free

Location: Front Lawn and Outdoor Garden at Phipps


Kids Day with the Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates are playing the Colorado Rockies and it’s a Kid’s Day at PNC Park! There will be a family-friendly carnival on Federal Street before the game, kids get a free pitching grip baseball at the gate and (weather permitting) all children can run the bases after the game.

Times: Carnival starts around 11, game start around 1:30pm

Ice Cream Geocaching with Venture Outdoors

Venture Outdoors invites families on a geocaching adventure in North Park, followed by an ice cream social. A total of 2-3 miles is typically hiked during this event.

Times: 1-3:30pm

Cost: $18 nonmembers, $12 members, children $8

Location: North Park


Weather Permitting Concert Series

Enjoy live outdoor music in a family-friendly setting at Weather Permitting. This week features performances by Red Western and Lone Wolf Club with the following food trucks: Berlin Street Foods, Brassero Grill and Pop Stop. Plus, beer from Rock Bottom is available for donation.

Cost: Adults $10, Children Free

Hartwood Acres Summer Concert Series

The Hartwood Acres Summer Concert series presents River City Brass Band.

Citiparks Cinema in the Park presents DisneyNature’s Bears at Schenley Park.
